10 Copywriting Tips I Learned From My Cats
Copy refers to the words on a sales page or advertisement. Copywriting refers to creating the message and writing up the actual words. Disclaimer: This article is based on my own cats. Yours may be different. 1. Walk on the edge and take some risks. My cats balance precariously on narrow ledges. They leap to the top of the refrigerator or the cabinet. Often I never know how they got up and how they get down. They just appear. Good copy calls for walking on the edge. The best copywriters say, “Take risks! Dare to offend!” But, like cats, the best copywriters know how far they can go. They rarely get stuck out on a limb with no way to get down. Some top copywriters go over the edge on their own websites, using colorful language (think Tony Soprano) and graphic images. They’re expert climbers who learned all the tricks before most of us opened our first web site. And they know their audiences very, very well. 2. Look like you’re having fun. It’s no accident that we say a happy person looks like a cat who swallowed the canary. Ever meet a cat who needs a Life Coach to find the purr-fect life? Cats look very pleased with themselves, whether snoozing, staring out the window, or looking smug after polishing off the last piece of roast beef you saved for your lunch. Great copy sounds happy too. Enthusiasm crackles through the words, sending a message: “This is so terrific! I just can’t wait to share!” 3. Expect to be appreciated. Dogs beg for attention. Cats take it for granted. “We deserve everything we get, and more,” they say — whether they’re pure-bred Siamese or funny-looking calicos. Good copy comes across as confident. “Of course you’ll like our service. Why wouldn’t you? We deliver great value and we know it.” Cats know: When you expect a reward, you’re more likely to get it. 4. Aim directly for your target audience. Cats walk into a room and jump directly into a very specific lap. Some cynics claim cats move right to the person who’s allergic or anti-cat. You’re probably anticipating this analogy: Write copy with a specific person in mind — someone who represents your target market. That’s the first lesson we learned in Copy School. Don’t try to please everyone. If your target turns out to be allergic to your service (or at least to paying for your service), find another. Just don’t give up and try to please everyone. 5. Engage your audience. Forget the myth of aloof cats. Mine jump into laps of total strangers and try to rub noses. When guests look puzzled, I have to explain, “She wants you to rub her ears.” (If you’re not a cat person, you may be feeling somewhat ill right about now. But keep reading: there’s good info here.) Copy also gets your readers involved. Good copy gets them reading one sentence after another, perhaps jumping to colored text boxes and bold type. Keep them reading: the way my cats motivate visitors to keep their attention focused long after you planned to get up and leave. 6. Command attention. Have you ever attended a social gathering where everyone talks politely — until a cat enters the room? Suddenly conversation comes to a halt. The guest of honor wants to pick up the cat, who may or may not agree with the idea. Needless to say, great headlines stop readers cold. Surfers want to stop chasing the waves and spend more time on your site. Maybe they’ll even browse a few pages…and then a few more. 7. Keep clean and beautiful no matter what. This one’s a no-brainer. I may be a fair-to-middling housekeeper, but my calico cat keeps her white fur free of smudges. Hair stays in place (except when it’s standing on end or dropping onto the sofa). Great copy looks fresh and appealing. Headlines line up and you rarely find grammar or spelling mistakes. You’ll want to dig in, read and stay awhile. 8. Choose a background that shows off your looks. Ever notice that cats seem to choose a background that makes them stand out? White cats choose dark cushions. My tabby avoids prints; my calico favors small places where she can curl up and demonstrate “cute.” Copywriters encourage simple backgrounds that make the text stand out. Black type on dark green? No way! Distracting graphics? Wild colors? Your message disappears like a black cat on a cold winter night. 9. Add a human touch. Ever notice how many advertisements include a cat? It’s not because cats make easy props. As models, they’re temperamental and amoody. They resist being shoved into poses. When freaked out, they’ve been known to scratch their highly-paid human colleagues. But cats make a cold scene seem warm. They make Beautiful People seem human — well, almost. Great copy sounds like a real person. You feel like you’re having a conversation with the writer. On your website, copy makes visitors feel like they’re old friends. 10. Who cares if someone hates you? There’s always another food dish around the corner. Cats know: somewhere, love is waiting. So they won’t stoop to eat bad food or tolerate an indifferent owner. Great copy never sounds hungry. Great copy recognizes that not everyone will become a client — and that’s a relief. Because with a value-driven product and a viable market, great copy attracts more than enough buyers — and makes it look easy. Continue reading

10 Core Tips for Coaching Youth Flag Football
The main difference between adult sports and kids’ games is that you should always remember that the kids sports are not as serious and results-oriented as adult games. You, the coach, and the kids should do it more for the fun of it. Aiming for the gold or winning should be a goal as long as you do not cheat or indulge in unfair practices just for the sake of it. American culture is competitive, but there’s no call to instill in children the mindset that winning is everything. There are also other things to think about, such as sportsmanship and respect for the other players. Too often, our children are fed the wrong messages by the media. They see players in fisticuffs, yelling and screaming at the referee, and other such actions; they read articles and listen to and watch commentaries that tell them that violence and cheating for the sake of winning are normal and acceptable. Often the coach must undo, in practice and on the field, what hours of exposure to these messages do to children. Look around you: adults have disorganized the world enough with their selfish attitudes and disingenuous explanations. Do you honestly want to help pass this down to the next generation? Teach the kids to accept victory with magnanimity and defeat graciously. The old saying “It’s not whether you win or lose; it’s how you played the game” should be emphasized. You probably already shake hands with the opposing coaching staff after a game, so try having your members thank the opposing team after the game, no matter who won. Dissuade them from showboating, but don’t go so far as to totally stop acknowledging the good things individuals do – a little attaboy after a fourth touchdown, or an excellent block, is never out of line. Just don’t promote individuals so much that they start acting like they’re better than their team mates. This is demoralizing and disruptive. As a coach you should inspire your members to give their best and work well with other team members to achieve the team’s goals. You are a role model for the children under your wing, like it or not. What you do impresses them more powerfully than what you say. So always carry yourself accordingly. Strive to emphasize sportsmanship, character, and trust. Have a Plan Always plan and think of your goals for the team. Discuss this with your team members. Take into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. The ages and sex of the members may vary and this should be carefully analyzed by the coach to maximize advantages and minimize the disadvantages. At their times of growth, not all boys and girls are going to develop at the same way or at the same rate. Warm Up Warm-up exercises before playing are very important. Some stretching and muscle exercises must be standard procedure before a game. This will ensure less injuries and more agility on the part of the players. They will become better prepared and stay focused as they move on into the game. It also gives them time to adjust from whatever it was that they were doing before – time to settle into the grove of playing team sports. Keep It Simple Remember to make your demonstrations of the skills or techniques simple for the kids to follow. Don’t try to cram too much information in one session. Demonstrations should not look complicated or time-consuming. Nor should they be boring; if you notice your team members’ attentions wandering while you’re talking, it’s time to either take a different tack on the subject or go do something else. Practice! Practice! Practice! Practice ensures mastery of techniques and skills. It also helps boost the kid’s confidence as they become more familiar with certain moves. Be Flexible Always be ready with alternatives should your main plans falter. Maybe doing something differently at that time is the order of the day. Get Yourself an Assistant Generals have lots of staff. The President has a whole Cabinet full of them. You’re a general of sorts too, aren’t you? Why don’t you have even one? You’re not superhuman. It helps if you have someone help you do your job as coach. This would leave you free to concentrate on your players since you wouldn’t have to think about setting the equipment up at the same time. It can also be a lifesaver in emergencies to have another adult around. Show Respect for Your Players Don’t be too dictatorial. Be sensitive to the children’s limitations and emotions. Even if they look up to you for guidance and support, you must value their opinions and understand your players’ different personalities. Never humiliate a player publicly. Never corner a player until he or she has no option but to go through you. If you’re explaining a play, ask them questions like, “What’s the reason for this?” or “Is there anything we should watch out for when trying this out?” The fact that you’re asking them reinforces their self-esteem and makes them feel like they’re an important part of your football team. Maintain Discipline Agree on the rules for discipline. Setting this early can lead to a more organized practice not just for one meeting but for the rest of the season. Earn and engage the kid’s respect so they will stay focused on the game and not engage in disruptive activities. If one team is practicing plays, the other players can be doing drills while waiting for their turn. This keeps everyone busy and prevents boredom. Have the assistant supervise one group while you coach the other. Learn to Differentiate between Normal Roughhousing and Malicious Behavior There’s no hard and fast rule to this, but call the member aside and talk to them if you feel it’s necessary. Don’t use exercise as a punitive measure. Benching them is more effective, as this deprives them of the chance to participate in the activity that they’re supposed to be engaging in. Following these tips will assist you in creating a positive coaching environment for your team. Continue reading

10 Common Lies Told by Women
Why are some relationships more honest than others? Why are some couples more truthful with each other while others like to deceive the partner? Nobody deserves to be lied, but there are no doubts that women are telling lies considerably and often. But so men do the same. If you have trust issues in your relationship, in general, a woman may lie to you. Trust is something that you must build from the beginning of the relationship. Even though, a lot of people say “white lies” in order to make others feel better. Some women lie because, as caring creatures they want to spare the feelings of the man they are dating or seeing. So, here are some common lies told by women that you should know. Someday you might hear them from your partner and it is better to know their real meaning. 1. You’re perfect. I love you just the way you are and I wouldn’t change a thing about you. Let’s be serious; nobody is perfect. At the beginning of a relationship all of them say this because they didn’t know you very well but after some time will definitely find something that needs changed. So, if she tells you something like this, don’t be too enthusiastic because she finds you perfect just for a couple of days, and after that she will ask you to change. 2. You’re right. Every time you are arguing with you’re girlfriend usually ends up by telling you that you are right? Maybe this makes you feel proud of you, but you have to know that this is a big lie. She said this just to make you shut up, even if she didn’t consider that you’re right. She knows that after a while you will see that she was right, and may be waiting for apologize. 3. Nothing is wrong. The most common lie “I’m fine” when asked if there is something wrong is the most used by women. You see that she is upset, she is acting strange or doesn’t want to talk to you too much and ask her what is the problem she says that everything is fine. They don’t want to tell the real truth but they are expecting that men to figure out that something is wrong and those they had a mistake with something. 4. I do love sports honey. Maybe she agrees to stay and watch with you every week at a football game but this doesn’t really mean that she like it. She accepts to do this just to show you that she is different from other girls and you have common interest. You may be thinking that you have found the perfect girl for you, because not many of them would like to stay to watch football, but don’t be too happy because after a while she might had enough and get angry every time you sit down to watch a game. 5. I like spending time with your friends. At the beginning this is ok, but not too much. Even if they are good friends of you, she would like to spend more time alone with you and not with your friends. If she didn’t tell you already this, she will ask you to keep visits from your buddies at minimum and then she might keep pretending she loves them. 6. Your family is adorable, so I like spending time with your family. The truth? Maybe twice a month. Think about it. Do you really think that she likes to spend time with your family where everybody is criticizing her and watch her every move? She agrees to spend time with your family when is necessary but she doesn’t do it with much pleasure even if she is pretending in front of you that she likes them. 7. Your bank account doesn’t matter. I hope you didn’t believe this. We all know that this is definitely a lie. All women want a guy that is financial stable and independent, a guy that can assure her a future with no financial problems. This doesn’t mean that you have to be very rich to have a girlfriend, but you have to have some money. 8. It doesn’t bother to me if you look after women or go with your boys at strip-clubs. This is too good to be truth. Even she says that this is ok, she will definitely be upset that you want to go. They hate to feel second best to a night out with the guys, and accept this in order to make themselves seem less pathetically needy. If you choose to go, she will make you a lot of comments after, so you better think twice before you go. 9. You are very good in bed. If she choose to speak about this topic without you ask her, you don’t have to believe all she says. If she starts to compliment you about your sexual experience it doesn’t mean that she really believes that. Often a woman who cares about a man tell him all that she knows he wants to hear just to make him feel good about himself. So think about your girlfriend, your relationship, your sexual experience and see if you really deserve compliments on this topic. 10. Don’t worry, it happens to everyone. If you just make a mistake, or fail in bed, you might hear this lie from your girlfriend. She doesn’t want to show you how upset she is on you but in her mind thinks something else. I wouldn’t be too sure that your mistake is forgiven and I would worry in not making too many “accidents” like these. With all these presented, now will be more easy for you to know when your girlfriend is lying. As you see, what a woman says is not what she really thinks. Continue reading
